About the LOT Program

The Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Program was first implemented in the New Jersey Chapter in 1997. The program represents mentoring outreach efforts of chapter members and the community. It functions primarily as a network of high school students and professionals working together to guide young people down a path to professional careers and academic success. The basic tenets of the program involve mentors working with students on a consistent basis to help them develop the habits necessary for achievement, to set and reach goals, and understand personal and collective responsibility.

The organization believes that influencing a young person to focus on success is a process that requires consistent interaction, a rise in expectations, and provision of the tools and resources necessary to meet their goals. Mentorship, tutoring and college preparation are necessary components toward increasing helping students to develop a sense of professionalism, confidence, focus on academic achievement, and planning for the future. LOT is that integrated program – an intense system of engagement and activities related to academic excellence – college preparation, professional development, community service, lifestyle lessons, personal finance, SAT/ACT preparation, history and current events, networking, public speaking, analytical development, leadership and more.

The LOT Program is open to 9th-12th grade students who are interested in learning how to get into college, improve SAT scores, set goals, develop professionally, work in the community, and lead peers. Students must have a demonstrated desire to achieve. An ideal participant in the program is driven and determined but needs some help in identifying the skills they should be developing, and exercising those skills in an impactful manner. Though, high-performing students are the natural participants in the program, students do not have to have a stellar grade point average. They should, however, at least have the strong desire to earn one and be engaged. Leaders participate in a variety of activities, workshops, and events that emphasize growth in the following areas:

Setting new standards

The hallmark of LOT is its intensity. Working with their mentors, high school students are encouraged to tackle challenges most other students wouldn’t dare even approach, regardless of socio-economic circumstances, and overcome those challenges with a high degree of excellence. At the same time, LOT students learn how to be leaders— setting goals and high standards for themselves and their peers, and motivating others to follow their lead as they make a difference in their communities.

Creating New Habits

Too many students are not proficient in basic subject matter. Moreover, to be competitive in a globally interconnected marketplace, proficiency is not enough. Excellence is required. The Leaders of Tomorrow Program helps students change the way they approach achievement on an everyday basis so that striving for excellence becomes a habit.

Embracing New Opportunities

LOT helps young people learn both how to prepare to take advantage of and create opportunities. They are exposed to different ways of thinking, different cultures, diverse career fields, numerous colleges, and people who have achieved greatness. In the process, future leaders discover that whatever they want to accomplish in life is within their grasp, as long as they have the discipline, courage, assertiveness, and skill to make it happen.

The highlights of the year include the selection of peer leadership, an oratory contest, the chapter’s participation at the National LOT Conference and the National LOT Business Case Competition.
